Sierra Leone Armed Forces Day
The celebrations typically begin with formal military ceremonies where different units showcase their precision and discipline. A highlight of the day is the Guard of Honour ceremony, usually presided over by the Commander-in-Chief (the President), who delivers a keynote address highlighting the armed forces’ achievements and future objectives. Distinguished service members receive medals and recognition for their outstanding contributions during these formal proceedings.
The military organizes various public engagement activities to strengthen civilian-military relations. These include equipment exhibitions, military capability demonstrations, and open days at military bases, allowing civilians to learn more about their armed forces. The military band performs stirring renditions of patriotic music, adding to the day’s ceremonial atmosphere. Special attention is given to honouring fallen soldiers and recognizing veterans who have served the nation.
Community engagement forms a crucial part of the celebrations, with military-civilian sporting events, cultural performances, and educational programs organized across the country. These activities help promote public understanding of the military’s role while inspiring young people to consider careers in the armed forces. The day also serves as a platform for highlighting the RSLAF’s professional development and its vital role in maintaining national security and contributing to Sierra Leone’s overall development.

The Gambia Independence Day
Traditionally, the day begins with official ceremonies at McCarthy Square (now Independence Stadium) in Banjul, featuring a formal military parade and the Guard of Honour ceremony at the State House. The President typically delivers a national address, reflecting on the country’s journey and outlining visions for the future.
During the early years of independence, celebrations were marked by widespread public participation, with schoolchildren and community groups participating in colourful parades and cultural performances. These events would showcase traditional music, dance, and cultural displays representing The Gambia’s diverse ethnic groups. Schools would prepare weeks in advance, with students practising marching formations and cultural performances, creating cherished memories of national pride and unity.
The main events now primarily occur at the State House, with participation largely limited to government officials, diplomatic corps, and invited guests. Despite this shift, communities across the country still mark the occasion with local celebrations, including sports competitions, cultural shows, and family gatherings. Some areas organize community festivals featuring traditional wrestling matches, music performances, and food fairs, keeping the spirit of independence alive at the grassroots level.

Canada Family Day
Alberta Premier Don Getty introduced Family Day as a holiday to emphasise the importance of family values. While two-thirds of Canadians enjoy this February holiday, it’s not observed in Quebec and the territories, and it remains a regular working day for federal government employees as it’s not a federal statutory holiday. In Yukon, a similar celebration called Yukon Heritage Day takes place on a Friday in February rather than a Monday.
Celebrations of Family Day embrace the Canadian winter spirit with diverse activities across the country. Communities organise outdoor events, winter festivals, and recreational activities suitable for families of all backgrounds. Popular traditions include outdoor winter sports like ice skating, sledging, and skiing, with many cities offering free or discounted access to public skating rinks and parks. Community events feature festivals, winter carnivals, and cultural celebrations, such as Winterlude in Ottawa and the Winter Festival in Edmonton. Museums and art galleries often provide special Family Day programming, making the holiday both fun and educational. Many families also choose to celebrate at home, enjoying quality time through home-cooked meals, board games, or movie marathons, making the day truly about family togetherness regardless of how it’s spent.
