Uganda reintroduces rhinos into a protected area where they have been extinct since 1983

Uganda has reintroduced rhinos to Kidepo Valley National Park in a major conservation step aimed at restoring a species wiped out there by poaching.

Two southern white rhinos were moved from the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, followed by two more, as part of a relocation effort led by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and conservation partners. Rhinos had not lived in Kidepo since 1983.

The Ziwa program, launched in 2005, has successfully bred the species over the years, providing stock for this translocation. More rhinos are expected later this year, including some from Kenya. Poaching remains a threat across Uganda’s protected areas despite improved security, driven by Asian demand for rhino horn products that often command higher prices than gold in illegal markets.

Gambia moves to strengthen data privacy and digital economy with new communications bill

The Gambia’s National Assembly has begun debating a new bill aimed at protecting personal data and modernising the country’s digital sector.

The Communications Bill 2025, introduced on Monday, March 23, would regulate electronic transactions, media and broadcasting, and strengthen cybersecurity and public trust in digital systems. It also seeks legal recognition for electronic signatures, contracts and online communications to support e-commerce and innovation.

Digital Economy Minister Lamin Jabbi told lawmakers the reforms are designed to modernise the sector, encourage investment and competition, and improve consumer protection and privacy. If passed, the bill would also set clearer rules on data use, misleading advertising and digital service standards.

Namibia has been praised as a leading example of how African countries can align their agricultural plans with the African Union’s new 10-year framework.

Speaking at a technical workshop in Windhoek on 24 March, AUDA-NEPAD’s Manyewu Mutamba said Namibia stands out for the way it has brought government, stakeholders and strong leadership, including the Office of the President, into the process. He said this kind of consultative, country-owned approach is exactly what the AU wants to encourage.

Mutamba also highlighted Namibia’s Strategy for the Transformation of the Agrifood Sector (STAS), which sets out how the sector will be governed and coordinated.
