India: Justice BR Gavai to take oath as Chief Justice, first Buddhist in the role
Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is set to make history as India’s 52nd Chief Justice. He will become the first Buddhist and second Scheduled Caste member to hold the nation’s highest judicial position. His tenure will extend until November 23, 2025.
Throughout his distinguished career, Justice Gavai has been instrumental in several landmark judgments, including validating Article 370’s abrogation, striking down the electoral bonds scheme, and upholding the 2016 demonetization. He has also demonstrated his commitment to civil rights through significant rulings, such as granting bail to AAP leader Manish Sisodia and staying Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in the Modi surname case.
Born in Amravati in 1960, Justice Gavai’s legal journey began in 1985. He served in various capacities, including as Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor, before his elevation to the Bombay High Court in 2003. His appointment as Chief Justice of India marks a significant milestone in the judiciary’s commitment to inclusivity and constitutional values.

Anita Anand, daughter of Indian immigrants, becomes Canada’s foreign minister
Anita Anand has made history as Canada’s first Hindu foreign minister. Prime Minister Mark Carney appointed her in a major Cabinet reshuffle. The former Defence Minister took her oath of office on the Bhagavad Gita, marking a significant milestone for Canada’s diverse political landscape.
An accomplished academic and politician, Anand entered politics in 2019 as MP for Oakville, Ontario. Her impressive career includes managing Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine procurement and overseeing military support to Ukraine as Defence Minister. Born to Indian immigrant doctors in Nova Scotia, she holds degrees from Dalhousie University, the University of Toronto, and Oxford University, and has taught at prestigious institutions including Yale University.
The appointment comes as part of Carney’s streamlined Cabinet, reduced from 39 to 29 ministers. While key economic positions remain unchanged, Anand replaces Melanie Joly, who moves to the industry ministry. This restructuring aims to strengthen Canada’s economic ties with the US and maintain its position among G7 nations.

IPL 2025 set to resume on May 17 after India-Pakistan ceasefire announcement
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the TATA Indian Premier League 2025 will recommence on 17 May, following a week-long suspension due to military tensions between India and Pakistan.
The tournament’s restart will feature Royal Challengers Bengaluru versus Kolkata Knight Riders at Bengaluru. The final, originally scheduled for 25 May, has been pushed to 3 June. This 18th edition of the IPL marks the tournament’s first interruption due to military tensions between the neighbouring nations.
