Antigua and Barbuda Independence Day
Antigua and Barbuda Independence Day also marked the adoption of national symbols, including the flag, coat of arms, and the national anthem, “Fair Antigua, We Salute Thee.”
Festivities on Independence Day are vibrant and diverse, featuring official ceremonies and parades, cultural performances, and exhibitions. Communities come together to enjoy sports events, street parties, and food festivals, celebrating the rich heritage and achievements of Antigua and Barbuda.
Independence Day serves as a time for reflection on the nation’s journey, a celebration of its identity, and an opportunity for Antiguans and Barbudans to unite in national pride.
The Commonwealth bids farewell to Patricia Scotland, welcomes Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey
At the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), Ankita Yadav, our representative, had the honour of bidding farewell to Patricia Scotland, the outgoing Commonwealth Secretary-General, during the Commonwealth Women’s Forum: Collective Action for a Resilient Commonwealth – Solidarity for Gender Equality.
The Commonwealth Women’s Forum brings together delegates from across the Commonwealth nations to celebrate and highlight the political, economic, and societal contributions of women. This forum serves as a platform to identify policies aimed at advancing gender equality and fostering peace for all.
Key outcomes from the Commonwealth Women’s Forum are set to inform discussions among Commonwealth leaders, focusing on the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. The aim is to ensure that women and girls are included at the highest levels of decision-making on issues that directly impact their lives.
In a significant development during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2024) held in Apia, Samoa, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has been elected as the new Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

Diwali
The festivities typically span five days, with the principal celebration occurring on the third day, known as Diwali night. During this time, devotees worship idols of Lakshmi and Ganesha to seek divine blessings for prosperity, wealth, and the removal of obstacles in their lives and endeavours. Homes are meticulously cleaned and adorned with rangoli (colourful floor designs created with coloured rice or powder). Diyas are lit everywhere to symbolise the triumph of light over darkness. Diwali is also a time for generosity and compassion, as many engage in charitable activities, distributing clothing and food to those in need.
