Kwasi Kwarteng becomes UK’s new chancellor of the exchequer
Kwasi Kwarteng has just become the first British Chancellor of the Exchequer of African descent. Born in East London in 1975, his parents arrived from Ghana to study in Britain in the 1960s. His traditional Ashanti first name Kwasi means “born on Sunday”, even though he was actually born on a Monday. With a barrister mother and an economist father who works for the Commonwealth Secretariat, Kwarteng is also the first Chancellor to hold a PhD in economics, having studied at Eton, Cambridge and Harvard.
Liz Truss becomes UK prime minister after meeting Queen Elizabeth II
Liz Truss defeats Indian-origin Rishi Sunak and becomes UK’s Prime Minister after meeting Queen Elizabeth II. Truss is the third woman prime minister of the United Kingdom and replaced Boris Johnson. Her immediate list of plans includes boosting the economy through tax cuts and fixing energy crises.
