This festival revolves around three major crops – rice, turmeric, and sugarcane. Pongal is a dish cooked in the courtyard of the house in clay pots. People clean their homes and decorate them with Kolams – a decorative art made on the floor with a white paste of rice. This day also involves people dancing and singing around bonfires.

Also referred to as a “Bonfire Festival” or the “Festival of Farmers” where fire marks a source of rejuvenation and renewal, this festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm by newly-married couples and those who have witnessed childbirth to seek blessings from the elderly. During this period, various kite festivals are hosted where people from all around the world gather to display their colourful and innovative kites and enjoy delicious, traditional recipes.

Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, announces the first-ever Global Tourism Resilience Conference. The three-day conference is scheduled to be held in February. It will include more than 40 global speakers, bringing insights on various topics including the Afro-Caribbean component.
