The former colony of Northern Rhodesia, previously part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland since 1953, marked this historic event with a ceremony at the Independence Stadium in the capital, Lusaka. At present, Lusaka hosts the headquarters of 15 African freedom movements, among them Zanu and Zapu from Rhodesia. During the celebration, a massive copper torch was lit on a hill overlooking the city. The Queen’s representative, the Princess Royal, presented the Instruments of Independence to the new president of the country, Kenneth Kaunda.

In some regions, Dussehra also marks the end of the Ramlila performances, a series of plays and musicals depicting the life of Lord Rama, culminating in the reenactment of Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana. Cameroonian fintech startup Koree clinched the top prize of US$50,000 in cash at the annual Ecobank Fintech Challenge, a competition organized each year by the pan-African bank Ecobank Group. The challenge aims to bolster innovative startups by offering cash prizes and additional developmental support. Koree made history as the first-ever female-led winner of the challenge, securing the coveted US$50,000 top prize. Wolf Technology from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) claimed the second position, winning US$10,000, while Kenya’s Flexpay Technologies emerged as the second runner-up.
