Google to run internet cables to Pacific islands in Australia-US deal

Alphabet’s Google, in collaboration with the US and Australian governments, will lay undersea cables to provide Internet access to eight Pacific Ocean nations. It will include Micronesia, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. The deal, expanding Google’s existing project in the region, involves a total funding of US$65 million. Canberra will contribute US$50 million, and Washington will add another US$15 million.

This area is adjacent to prominent mines like First Quantum Minerals’ Sentinel and Kansanshi copper mines, as well as Barrick’s Lumwana mine.
