Africa’s Free-Trade Area to Get $7 Billion in Support From AfDB
African Development Bank (AfDB) to support trade valued at $7 billion over the next five years in a bid to spur the growth of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) that went into effect on Jan. 1. AfDB will be targeting small and medium-sized companies, climate-friendly enterprises and women-owned businesses for its various trade intervention facilities.

Moderna to build vaccine-manufacturing plant in Africa
Moderna plans to spend about $500 million to build a state-of-the-art mRNA facility in Africa. At present, only about 4.5% of Africans had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the continent’s top public health official. The proposed site is likely to include drug substance manufacturing as well as bottling and packaging capabilities.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Edward launch Royal Baton Relay in honor of Commonwealth Games
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Edward mark the 2022 Commonwealth Games baton relay, a sporting event held every four years with athletes from across the Commonwealth. The baton will travel for about 294 days with the Queen’s message to the Commonwealth. The event will take place in Birmingham, the second-largest city in England.
