Kwasi Kwarteng becomes UK’s new chancellor of the exchequer
Kwasi Kwarteng has just become the first British Chancellor of the Exchequer of African descent. Born in East London in 1975, his parents arrived from Ghana to study in Britain in the 1960s. His traditional Ashanti first name Kwasi means “born on Sunday”, even though he was actually born on a Monday. With a barrister mother and an economist father who works for the Commonwealth Secretariat, Kwarteng is also the first Chancellor to hold a PhD in economics, having studied at Eton, Cambridge and Harvard.
