Sinhala and Tamil New Year’s Eve Sri Lanka
This festival marks the beginning of the New Year according to the traditional Sinhala and Tamil calendars. The celebrations begin several days before the actual New Year’s Day, with people cleaning their houses and preparing special traditional foods, such as kiribath (milk rice) and kokis (crispy fried sweets). On the day before the New Year, known as “Punya Kalaya,” people visit temples to perform religious rituals and make offerings.

On this day, people wear new clothes, clean their houses, and decorate them with alpana (traditional patterns made with rice paste). The day begins with a procession called the “Mangal Shobhajatra,” where people carry colourful masks and float through the streets. Traditional dishes such as panta bhaat (fermented rice), ilish bhaji (hilsa fish curry), and pitha (rice cakes) are prepared and shared among family and friends.
Aluva startup to launch India’s 1st AR ambulance
India unveils its first-ever assisted reality (AR) ambulance in Kerala which will allow doctors to provide consultations remotely. The AR ambulance, developed by Apothecary Medical Services in Aluva, will be soon operational on a 30-day trial run with about 50 patients capacity. The ambulance is equipped with advanced 5G technology, enabling remote medical instructions to be provided by a team of doctors to the patient’s accompanying person.
