18-year-old Gukesh D, the newly crowned World Chess Champion, received a warm reception at the airport from enthusiastic fans and officials. Tamil Nadu Sports Secretary Atulya Mishra honoured the young prodigy with a bouquet, celebrating his remarkable victory over China’s Ding Liren in Singapore with a score of 7.5-6.5.
Gukesh, now the youngest world champion in chess history, attributed his success to the Chennai Chess Olympiad and his mentor, Viswanathan Anand. As only the second Indian to claim this prestigious title after Anand, Gukesh’s triumph has shattered Garry Kasparov’s long-standing record for the youngest world chess champion.
In recognition of this historic achievement, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a grand felicitation ceremony to be held at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai on 17 December. This event will honour Gukesh’s extraordinary accomplishment and celebrate India’s growing prominence in the world of chess.
