It is a day for citizens to reflect on the country’s journey towards self-determination and the ongoing importance of upholding democratic values. In his message for the 48th anniversary of Trinidad and Tobago’s republic, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley encouraged citizens to acknowledge the nation’s achievements while facing its challenges. He emphasised Trinidad and Tobago’s influence on the global stage, noting its recent presidency of the United Nations General Assembly as a symbol of its strength.
The Prime Minister also recognised the country’s many contributions to the world, from the industrial success of Point Lisas to the invention of the steel pan. He honoured national heroes from various fields, including sports, culture, and science, such as Hasely Crawford, Keshorn Walcott, Brian Lara, and Beryl McBurnie.
