In a significant development, the Indian government announced last Thursday that the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus will be established overseas for the first time. The chosen location for this historic endeavour is the Tanzanian island city of Zanzibar. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the governments of India and Tanzania to facilitate this initiative. Adding another layer of significance to this milestone, it has been revealed that the inaugural IIT campus abroad will be led by a woman director. Officials confirmed that Preeti Aghalayam, an alumna of IIT-Madras and a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, has been appointed as the director-in-charge of the Zanzibar campus.
