The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) CEO, Francis Gatare, announced that the pilot phase of the Volcanoes National Park Expansion project will commence in 2024. Gatare also disclosed that the entire project is expected to cost about $255 million. The expansion initiative aims to increase the park’s size by approximately 23%. According to RDB’s 2022 annual report, gorilla tourism is one of the major contributors to Rwanda’s high-end tourism. It generated about $113 million in revenue, constituting a quarter of the $445 million total tourism revenues in 2022.
