This festival revolves around three major crops – rice, turmeric, and sugarcane. Pongal is a dish cooked in the courtyard of the house in clay pots. People clean their homes and decorate them with Kolams – a decorative art made on the floor with a white paste of rice. This day also involves people dancing and singing around bonfires.
