Republic Day in Malta is celebrated with great enthusiasm, especially in Valletta (the capital) and Marsa (the town opposite Valletta). The National Festivities Committee manages the major events each year, ensuring a vibrant and memorable occasion. For the 50th anniversary, the theme ‘L-Istorja, Int’ (meaning ‘History, You’) has been chosen by Culture Minister Owen Bonnici. This theme highlights the role of every individual in Malta’s achievements when it became a Republic.
The highlight of the 50th anniversary celebrations will be an audio-visual spectacle held from 13 to 15 December at St George’s Square in Valletta. A key feature of this event will be a stunning projection on the façade of the President’s Palace in Valletta. On Republic Street, the Maltese armed forces will lead a military parade, while the streets will be adorned with banners featuring the Maltese flag and the national colours of red and white. Various cultural events are organised by the Malta Council for Culture and Arts, including performances of traditional Maltese folk dances like ‘il-Maltija’ and ‘parata.’ The celebrations are capped off with spectacular fireworks displays across the Maltese islands.
