About the Event

Wednesday 22 June 2022: 6am Kigali time | 9.30am IST |12 noon Hong Kong time

Rwanda is hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) from 20th to 27th June 2022 in Kigali. This is  four years after the 54 Commonwealth nations last met in London, 2018 following postponements  due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

Rwanda joined the Commonwealth in 2009 and is a country  in Central Africa,  sharing a  border with Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is also known as the “land of a thousand hills”, and holds nature’s treasure consisting of volcanoes, 23 lakes and many rivers, which are also a source of the river Nile.

What is CHOGM?

CHOGM is the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting which usually takes place  every 2 years. But this time all the Heads are meeting after 4 long years – after the last meeting in the UK in 2018, the date was delayed due to the  Covid pandemic.

The 2022 CHOGM theme is “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming”. At this summit, Commonwealth leaders will gather in Rwanda to share common values and will agree on actions and policies that can be implemented to improve the lives of the 2.5 billion people of the Commonwealth. Discussions related to post-COVID recovery, climate change and other issues of small island states will also be a highlight of the event.
