As well as marking the culmination of India’s long freedom struggle, Indian Independence, arriving «At the stroke of the midnight hour» on August 15 1947, while the world slept, came as a landmark moment in transforming the Commonwealth into a partnership of equal nations, paving the way for the future admission of Republics.
