India’s aspirations to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games have received a significant boost after the Canadian province of Ontario withdrew support for the country’s joint bid.
Ontario’s exit, citing spiraling costs and minimal long-term gains, has left Canada’s campaign in disarray and elevated India’s position in the race to host the prestigious centenary edition of the Games.
With Canada’s united front now fractured, India’s proposal centered around the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Ahmedabad has emerged as the frontrunner. The Indian delegation’s presentation to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) emphasised infrastructure readiness, cost-efficiency, and long-term sports legacy.
India’s bid is further strengthened by the CGF’s revised hosting framework, which promotes sustainable planning over competitive bidding. The CGF officials are scheduled to visit Ahmedabad ahead of the August 31 deadline for formal bids.
