Happy III Full Moon Poya Day to everyone celebrating! The day celebrates attaining Vivarana (the assurance of becoming a Buddha) by the Bodhisatta Maitreya and the commissioning of 60 disciples by The Buddha to disperse his teachings. The day also commemorates the conclusion of the three-month retreat (vipassana).
Some of the key events remembered during the Poya Days include Buddha’s birthday, Buddha’s enlightenment, Buddha sending 60 disciples as missionaries, Buddha’s personal visits to Sri Lanka, Mahinda bringing Buddhism to Sri Lanka, and the first Buddhist council held after Buddha’s passing.
