Endangered sharks can be still vulnerable even in the marine protected area (MPA). The first long-term monitoring studies of reef sharks within MPA tracked the number of Caribbean reef sharks at Glover’s Reef Atoll and documented a population decline between 2009-2019. The whole study eventually led to new legislation which prohibits shark fishing 2 miles around Glover’s Reef Atoll, Lighthouse Reef Atoll, and Turneffe Atoll.
