African Union Day, also known as Africa Day, commemorates the birth of the AU, which succeeded the OAU in promoting unity and cooperation among African states. Founded on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the OAU brought together 32 independent African countries opposing colonialism and apartheid. The AU, launched on July 9, 2002, in Durban, South Africa, by 53 African leaders, adopted a new vision for the continent’s development. Through various initiatives, the AU addresses challenges including peace, security, governance, human rights, health, education, trade, and environment.
